An important milestone was reached at the Marsa LNG project in Sohar, northern Oman on May 1 when the official groundbreaking ceremony took place.
Technip Energies is carrying out an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract at the site, which is operated by the Marsa LNG JV (with TotalEnergies and OQ Exploration and Production as partners).
The new Marsa LNG plant will use electric-driven motors instead of conventional gas turbines. Electrical power will be fully compensated by renewable electricity from a planned solar farm. This will make the asset one of the lowest greenhouse gas intensity LNG plants ever built. In addition, the LNG produced will be used as marine fuel, thus reducing the shipping industry’s overall carbon footprint.
Arnaud Pieton, Technip Energies’ CEO attended the groundbreaking ceremony and said: “This is great news and I’d like to thank every member of our team for their dedication. We broke ground not just on a facility, but on a vision – one built on collaboration, innovation, and determination, as we help turn our clients’ plans into progress.”
Development at the plant has been swift. Technip Energies’ teams were mobilized on site early January 2025 when the first equipment arrived, and preparations began for construction of site offices. In another step forward, piling activities got under way at the end of February.
